GUWAHATI, 24 Sept 2012 : The Gauhati High Court on Friday directed the Assam government to submit the report on what steps it (the government) has taken to identify the doubtful citizens lodged in therelief camps in the Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD) following the recent ethnic violence within November 19.
Based on a public interest litigation (PIL no. 57/2012) recently filed by the All Assam Tribal Sangha (AATS) in the High Court, Chief Justice AK Goel and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan issued the order to the State government.
The PIL demands that the State government should clarify on what steps it has taken to identify the BTAD refugees who don’t have any valid documents to prove their identity. “Many suspected/doubtful nationals are currently being lodged in the relief camps in the BTAD,” the PIL added.
Advocate Ananda Bhuyan said if the State government tries to rehabilitate the non-tribals in the State’s tribal blocks and belts, it will be a violation of the Assam Accord 1985, the BTC Accord 2003, the Foreigners’ Act 1946 and the National Security Act 1980.
